Website cost in Geelong: compare the scope before the quote

A website quote depends on what the business needs built, who prepares the content and what happens after launch. For a Geelong service business, start with the jobs you want enquiries for. This guide explains what changes the scope and how to compare quotes without treating different jobs as the same purchase.

THE WORK

Define the enquiry you want

Write down the services you want to sell, the places you work and how a customer should contact you. A simple enquiry form is a different scope from a booking system that checks availability or takes a payment.

For a trade business working across Geelong and Torquay, the site needs to explain which jobs and areas you cover. That does not mean creating a near-identical page for every suburb. Start with useful service information and add location pages only when there is something distinct to say.

THE WORK

Pages and content change the workload

A page count alone does not tell you how much work is involved. Reusing approved service copy differs from interviewing the owner and writing it. Supplying finished photographs differs from needing new photography.

Ask the provider to name the pages and who prepares each part. Check whether the quote includes writing, editing existing copy or only placing the text you supply. Record who approves the content and how revisions work.

  • Services and pages the quote includes
  • Copy and photographs you need to supply
  • Content the provider will create or revise
  • Approval stages and the handling of additional changes
THE WORK

Connections need their own scope

A button linking to a booking tool involves different work from connecting the website to a live job system. Describe what a customer should be able to do and which system should receive the information.

Ask about software subscriptions, account ownership and any third-party charges. The website build fee does not automatically include booking software, payment processing or an accounting connection. A provider should assess compatibility before promising the connection.

THE WORK

Replacing a site adds handover work

A rebuild can involve moving useful content, checking existing addresses and redirecting pages that have a new home. Ask the provider how they will handle the current site before agreeing to switch it off.

List the domain, hosting, email and any tools tied to the site. Establish who owns each account and who can approve changes. Do not assume moving the website also moves business email, or that a new provider has access to everything.

THE WORK

Compare the ongoing costs as well

Domain renewal, hosting, software licences and website care are separate things to check. Ask who pays for each, when they renew and what happens if you leave the provider. A low build quote is not enough information to compare the ongoing arrangement.

For Avera-built sites, the first year of website care is included. Paid care starts from month 13. We set out the care scope and ongoing arrangement in the quote. A site built elsewhere needs an assessment before we agree to care for it.

New features and redesign work need their own scope. Do not read a care plan as unlimited changes, guaranteed uptime or emergency support unless the agreement says so.

THE WORK

Put competing quotes beside the same brief

Give each provider the same service list, current website address and required enquiry path. Mark any differences in their responses before comparing the totals. A quote that excludes copy or migration is not the same job as one that includes it.

Ask each provider to explain the launch process and what you receive at handover. If a task is missing, get it clarified in writing. You can then decide which work to do now and which can wait.

  • Which deliverables and revisions are included?
  • Who owns the website content, domain and accounts?
  • Which subscriptions and renewals are separate?
  • How will existing pages and enquiries work at changeover?
  • What support follows launch, and what changes after the first year?
BEFORE WE START

Questions about the scope

Why does Avera not publish a website price list?

We quote after discussing the required pages, content and systems. Publishing one price would leave too much of the job undefined. You receive the scope and cost before work starts.

Is a smaller website always the cheaper job?

Page count is only one factor. A short site that needs new copy, content migration and booking connections can involve more work than a larger site using approved material and a simple enquiry form.

What should I send to get a useful quote?

Send the current website address, the services and areas you cover, and what customers should do on the site. Note any tools it needs to connect to and whether you have copy and photographs ready. Keep passwords out of the enquiry.
